BMW Welt Munich and BMW museum
A visit to BMW Welt Munich is a must for car enthusiasts. Here you can view the latest production models, maybe watch a new owner take delivery of their vehicle on centre stage and learn 90 years of BMW history at the adjacent BMW museum.
It is important to note, however when planning your trip that BMW Welt and the BMW Museum are not the same thing.
BMW Welt is the head offices, delivery spot for new vehicles and a showroom for the latest production models.
Nearby BMW Museum displays the technical development of BMW cars and motorcyles over the past century.
Both are well worth a visit however and are in very close proximity. If you are really interested you can take a guided tour of the production plant as well.
BMW Welt building
The futuristic architecture of BMW’s head offices is an attraction in itself. Designed to replicate a four cylinder motor, the double cone glass and steel construction has a 16000 square metre roof space, with only 11 internal columns holding up the entire structure.
The roof is also designed with an 800kw solar power plant, adding to the solar passive aspects of the building which augment both heating and ventilation.
Besides being an architectural wonder, the building is also the company’s delivery centre for all new vehicles and an exhibition centre and function venue.
Customers picking up cars are given a dramatic entrance. They await their new vehicle in an enormous glass-walled hall, and their cars are lifted up from lower levels on a round elevator platform. Quite a statement, I must say.
If you can’t quite afford the car, perhaps you can afford the keyring? There are a range of merchandising shops on the ground floor below. The interesting thing we did learn was that in Germany the BMW is a standard vehicle, not the luxury vehicle we perceive it as in Australia.
BMW Production models on display
BMW Welt is a showroom for all the current BMW and Rolls Royce production models and concept cars. From the latest racing numbers, to luxury automobiles or the latest in hybrid vehicles, it is all on show.
Hybrid vehicles at BMW world
Take the opportunity to sit in the latest Rolls, or perch yourself on a “Beemer” cycle for a photo opportunity.
Across the road from BMW Welt is the BMW Museum, housing over 100 vehicles spanning 90 years of BMW construction, with interactive and futuristic displays.
Entry to BMW Welt is free and there is a small charge to enjoy the BMW Musuem. Guided tours of BMW Welt, the museum and plant are also available.
The complex is adjacent to the Olympiapark stadium, making it a convenient day out when visiting Munich.
